Much like POE Currency , an great passive ability tree provides an impossible number of combinations to shape my personality, and skills aren't inherent to my class but items I find while researching. As I use them, they level up, unlocking modifiers that augment their behavior, like making a rain of arrows deal fire damage or thrown shurikens stun enemies. With my four abilities, there's a degree of customization that makes Wolcen's dungeons feel more like labs to test out my experimental playstyles. 1 spell gives me a railroad gun that fires in a broad column which narrows the longer I charge the ability while the other let's me immediately mark foes and implement them such as in Red Dead Redemption 2. It's hard to stick to one style because every time I discover a new skill, I must check it out.
A good deal of these skills are enjoyable to use, but others aren't. Part of the reason I ditched my rogue was since combat in Wolcen is really a nuisance. The left mouse button can be used for both moving my character and autoattacking, and there is no way to rebind it. When the display is full of enemies--which it is--it's really difficult to move around rather than autoattacking anything you clicked. Another problem with playing with a melee personality is that auto-attacks are needed to regenerate your Rage, the main resource for skills. But in contrast to this skills that are flashier and more deadly, autoattacking with weapons feels sluggish and punishingly short-ranged. It is just not enjoyable to use.
Wolcen does not feel ready to depart Early Access, although there are some promising ideas here. Even without all of the bugs, even menus that are unresponsive, and sometimes battle, the campaign feels too grim, the conversation oscillates between cliche and silly, and also the constant cutscenes are poorly animated and stilted. I'd frankly much rather Wolcen have no narrative in any way. If you have absolutely exhausted all the other games in this genre and you are desperate for looting and more clicking, Wolcen will probably stimulate that region of your mind for a bit. It's buggy and janky and sometimes outright frustrating, but it does have a few redeeming qualities which have kept me from penetrating it entirely. For now, at least.
